Submit and Resist

James 4:7

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Reflection

The struggle is real – the fight of our will against God’s will. Sin, first apparent in Adam and Eve, and on full display in our daily lives is the product of our will objecting to God’s.Salvation is dependent on surrendering one’s will and placing it under subjection to God’s authority. Acknowledging our sinfulness – disobedience to God, and a violation of His righteousness is the first step. Submission is not a popular word in today’s culture. Look at the news and you will find a world raging against God’s righteousness and authority. But submission to God is precisely what we are called to do. In spiritual warfare and a journey in sanctification, we must continually submit ourselves to God. Actively placing God on the throne of our life leaves no room for Satan. When we fully submit to God, God’s Spirit fills our minds and soul and gives us the strength to resist Satan. And we are assured in God’s word that in submission to God and in resisting Satan, Satan will flee. Flee – to run away in fear. Not a fear of my power or strength, but of God’s lordship and authority. Submit yourself to God, and resist Satan’s lies and he will run away in fear of God’s Spirit and power in you.

Prayer

Father, without you we are nothing. Teach us humble submission and the wonderful life under your authority, grace, and mercy that results. Protect us through the power of your Spirit, and we will glorify You as Satan runs away in defeat. Thank you for your victory over sin and death through our Savior, Jesus. Amen.
