Do you keep to-do lists? How about a list of goals for the year, or a personal strategic plan? A bucket list?
Some people wing it, whatever happens along the way, and just deal with it and adjust. Then there are others who have lists and goals and struggle when things don’t quite work out the way they plan. Today’s text can be a tough reminder that we aren’t always in control.
We can make our plans,
But the LORD determines our steps.
“We can make our plans…” We certainly do. We all have ideas of what we want and expect in life. Hopes and dreams. A list of “will dos” and “will nots.” And yet, as life happens, our plans are often wrecked. Things don’t go the way we wanted. And we are confronted with choices as to how we will respond – do we respond in submission and faith to our Heavenly Father and say, “not my will, but Thine be done”? Do we shake our fists at the world and God in a stubborn refusal to accept? We can make our plans, but the LORD determines our steps. As Christians, we confess that God as our Savior and Lord has control – that we submit to Him and His authority. We are called to be humble, to surrender, and to acknowledge our dependence on Him. Do so today. If you struggle with this, think about what causes the anxiety and frustration.
Father, you are a good, good God, that loves us. Forgive our arrogance for thinking that we know best. Forgive us when we forget, or struggle with your sovereignty over all things. Take our plans, dreams, hopes, and prayers, and sanctify them according to your will. IN Jesus’ name, Amen.
