Romans 12:1-2 ESV
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
Quieten your heart and mind. Turn off all distractions and close your eyes. Put away anxiousness and listen. Bring your heart and mind into stillness before God. Set aside your agenda and opinions and reflect on God’s Words.
There are two lessons we can pull from these verses regarding worship. First, worship is the way we live, not what we do on Sunday morning. All parts of who we are – mind, spirit, heart, action, thoughts, and word – our entire being is to worship God through holy living. Second, our corporate worship – our service of worshipping God must be informed. Corporate worship must arise from an understanding of God and His truth. Corporate worship must engage the mind, not just emotions or senses. How is your worship of God – in your attitudes, lifestyle, relationships, words, and what entertains you? When you attend Sunday worship – is it intentional– engaging your mind for renewal and applying God’s Word and truth to your life?
How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord, is laid for your faith in His excellent Word! What more can He say than to you he hath said, to you who for refuge to Jesus have fled? Father, speak to us through Your Word. Give us ears to hear and hearts to accept Your Word. Make us students of Your Word! So that our knowledge and understanding of You grow. Let us not be ignorant of Your Word. Teach us, Father, and through Your Holy Spirit, draw us into more sincere love, fuller obedience, and purer worship in all we do, say, and think. For Your glory. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
