In All Things
Life is tough, and the idea that we are to be thankful even when our lives fall apart may be difficult for… most people. But let’s look at Scripture…
1 Thessalonians 5:18
in everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus to you-ward.
We are to give thanks “in everything”. Note that the expectation isn’t to give thanks “for everything”.
I can’t imagine a family who just lost a child to say “thank you FOR this loss.” But we can thank God for His presence, His grace, and mercy in times such as the death of a loved one. Giving thanks to God despite difficulties is the goal.
It’s a tough habit to learn – to be grateful, to express thanks regardless of how we feel and what we’re going through. Stay tuned though, tomorrow’s Rooted shows us why it’s so important. But, the greatest faith, is to really believe that even the bad things – God uses for good in those that love Him as God (see Romans 8:28).
Father, just like the children of Israel, we are a stubborn and ungrateful lot. Forgive us. Teach us how to give thanks in everything, for we know that this is Your will. It’s a difficult lesson, and one only learned through difficulty. Help us to practice it in the good times, so that when difficulty comes, we’ve developed a habit of thankfulness. Thank you for the salvation you provide through your Son, Jesus, and we pray to you in His name. Amen.
