What not to do

Wisdom literature. The collection of proverbs breaks it down into easy-to-understand sentences and instructions. It will tell the reader what to do, and then will often say what NOT to do.

Proverbs 3:5-6  ESV

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

“And lean not on your own understanding.” This is the extra – to be sure we really get it. Part one – Trust in the LORD with all your heart. Part 2 – and don’t lean on your own understanding. In other words, when things don’t make sense, when things aren’t going the way you want, when God isn’t answering your prayers – trust in the LORD, rather than yourself. Trust in God rather than your plans, your wants, and your wisdom. Do you? Remember gratitude? Gratitude in spite of circumstances is the expression of trust in God rather than self.

We worship you O God, as Yahweh, as LORD. You are self-existent, all powerful, all knowing. You are God. Help us to trust You, because of who you are as God, but also because of your example and our experience – that you are steadfast, never changing, and that your love never fails. Remind us that you do ALL things well. Teach us to trust in you. In Jesus’ name, amen.
